Highlights Of The 2009 New York Auto Show

There still is much turmoil going on in the auto industry but that didn't stop automakers from rolling out some exciting new models at the 2009 New York Auto Show. There was a lot to see and a person was able to get the first look at some new vehicles and concepts. They came in all styles, shapes and some had pretty powerful engines under the hood. Here are some of the highlights of some of the memorable vehicles that made their debut.

Nissan 370Z Roadster
The Nissan 370Z convertible has an electrically powered soft top rather than a folding hard top. This was done in order to keep weight down and reduce complexity. The roof was designed to provide a silhouette that matches the coupes and to keep wind turbulence to a minimum. It also opens and closes at the push of a button.
The Touring Roadster has options that include Bose CD audio system, digital radio and Bluetooth. It can also have options which include 19 inch forged aluminum wheels, a limited slip differential and a navigation package. The 370 Z Roadster will be available in seven colours which include; red, black, silver, platinum, blue and black cherry.

BMW's X6M and X5M
BMW's X6M made its world debut and was joined the X5M. Both of these models are powered by newly developed 4.4 litres, twin-turbo V8 M engines that can deliver 555hp at 6,000 rpm. BMW says that these two are setting a new standard for acceleration, lateral grip, steering response and stopping power among the high-performance SUV's. Both the X6M and X5M can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 4.7 seconds.

2010 Land Rover
The 2010 Land Rover with a Jaguar V8 and 510 horsepower Range Rover Sport caused some excitement among the visitors. The new Land Rover has a new styling that is designed to give it a less cluttered look. It has a slightly deeper grille, a new bumper and slimmer headlights with LED side lighting.
The interior has been given a makeover with fresh switchgear and two four-way thumb switches on the steering wheel. The new Land Rover has a 12in TFT instrument panel that replaces the conventional instrument cluster. There is also the new 360 degree camera system that will give the driver an overall view of the road around the vehicle.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee seemed to be the star of the show. One of the many features includes the automaker's first application of its brand new flexible fuel, 280 horsepower, 3.6 litre V6 engine. There will be a choice of thee 4X4 systems. The 4X2 models will have a trailer towing capabilities up to 3,364 kilograms. The new Grand Cherokee has room for five. World Car of the Year: The New VW Golf
The New VW Golf gets the distinguished honours of the title of World Car of the Year 2009. The announcement was made at the New York Auto Show. The German car beat the other two finalists which were the Ford Fiesta and the Toyota iQ. There were 59 jurors from 25 countries across the world. The judges chose a top ten list of 51 cars and then the list was shortened to three. The vehicles were graded individually in categories including value and environmental impact. The Mazda2 won the title in 2008 and LexusLS460 won in 2007.
The new VW Golf has been designed to be quieter, sportier and more fuel efficient. It has a clean distinctive appearance and is fun to drive. The Golf - which has sold more than 26 million units in 120 countries - is one of the top selling vehicles of all time. The new 6th generation Golf first made its debut at the Paris Motor Show last autumn and made its US debut at this year's New York Auto Show.

Scion iQ Concept
Toyota's Scion sub brand which is aimed at young urban trendsetters unveiled its Scion iQ concept car that has been remodeled for Americans. They have given it an ultra aggressive makeover, with extra wide Yokohama tyres and LED lights at the front and rear. They added a centrally mounted trapezoid exhaust pipe which gives more detail to its already futuristic styling. The car is strictly a concept at the moment but Scion is convinced that small and funky cars like this are the wave of the future. No matter what style or model of vehicle you prefer, you could have found it at this year's New York Auto Show. There were fast high performance cars and plenty of small futuristic concept cars. It had something that would appeal to everyone.
