Almost two thirds of motorists have changed the way they drive as a result of escalating petrol costs according to a new poll by Motorpoint.
The online survey by the country’s leading car supermarket group found that 72% of motorists had changed their behaviour behind the wheel in order to reduce the amount of petrol they are using.
Record prices at the pumps are also having an affect on the types of cars people are driving. New figures from Motorpoint show a dramatic rise in the numbers of superminis being sold, with models such as the Ford Fiesta, Nissan Micra, Toyota Aygo and Vauxhall Corsa proving extremely popular. A poll earlier this year by Motorpoint revealed that more than two thirds of car buyers planned to downsize in an effort to save on running costs.
Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: “These figures come as little surprise when you consider the high cost of petrol. As the UK’s leading car supermarket, we are also reflecting this trend in our buying behaviour, altering our stock wherever possible to meet increased demand among customers for more fuel-efficient models.
“Of course, our pricing policy means that we are still passing on an average saving of around £5,000 per car compared with the recommended retail prices on franchised dealer forecourts. That sort of saving will go a long way to offsetting some of the mounting cost pressures on motorists.”
