2008 Fiat Punto Grande
The second series of Fiat's Grande Punto has recently become available in the UK. This popular supermini has received some significant changes from the first series. It now has a five year unlimited mileage warranty and Fiat's Blue&Me hands free communication and entertainment system as standard equipment. You can pick one up from between £7,200 - £13,500 and it seems most fall in very low insurance groups too.
Blue&Me is innovative hands-free system that allows the driver to use their Bluetooth mobile phone in the car and also has the ability to let you listen to music in digital format. It can be controlled by either voice or by buttons on the steering wheel. This is a great feature that keeps the driver's attention on the road and their not distracted by their mobile phone.
They have added the 1.4 8v engine to their line of engines and the petrol units show a significant improvement in performance while maintaining lower levels of emissions and fuel consumption. You have a choice of two petrol and four diesel units. The 1.3 litre multi-jet diesel engine is available with 76bhp and 90bhp outputs and is quiet, economical and refined.
The Grande Punto replaces the Active Sport model and has unique sporty interior trim, sports instruments and new tinted headlights and larger 16-inch alloy wheels. This is a sporty and chic styled car and it's reasonably priced.
Fiat has added three new colours to this line which include Rap Yellow, HillBilly Azure, and Ska Red. They have also discontinued Bolero Red, New Wave Blue and Caribbean Orange. The Fiat GP boasts its new sporty interior trim with digital display including an external temperature read-out.
The Fiat Grande Punto is beautifully styled and spacious. It has been awarded an NCAP five star safety rating. This new version will carry five adults comfortably plus luggage. The dashboard has a clean uncluttered look and has digital heating controls and the seats are firm and supportive.
This is a roomy hatchback and much larger than the current Punto with lots of head and legroom. The stereo sound system sounds good and has big easy to find buttons which are well placed on the dashboard. The Sporting model has been fitted with white dials and alloy wheels according to auto trader and is fitted with a satin finish dash which frames the centre console and runs across to the passenger side, while other lesser models in the range receive colour-coded dashboards. Most cars are simply fitted with tacky grey or black plastic dash boards so this is a big step forward.
Air-conditioning comes standard on Dynamic models and above. There is three and five door models available in most trim and engine combinations. The power steering has an ultra-light mode for low speed manoeuvres. This is a sporty supermini that has all the extras including style and comfort.
The steering is accurate and handles the road well. The Grande Punto features Fiat's 'City' mode switch, which lightens the steering when activated making it easier to park and make tight turns in the town centre. I have one of these in my Stilo and it is a very handy feature. This is a small car that delivers big car safety. The Fiat Grande Punto offers space and refinement in a chic, stylish package and will be a leader in the supermini market.
